If you want the answer before you read the reasoning: buy the Moza R3 bundle (base, ES wheel rim, and SR-P Lite pedals, usually around $350 and often less during a sale), add the load cell brake upgrade for those pedals at around $70, and spend the remaining budget on something rigid to bolt it to. The R3 does that. A G29 does not, because its gear train has backlash, and backlash means the tiny high-frequency stuff gets eaten before it reaches your hands. You’ll feel the big self-aligning torque and the kerbs. You won’t feel the front tyre load bleeding off.
There’s also a ceiling nobody mentions: unless your wheel is bolted to something serious, torque above roughly 5 Nm is wasted. It goes into flexing your mount, not turning your wheel. What about Fanatec
The Fanatec CSL DD is a genuinely good 5 Nm base, and on paper it belongs in this conversation. In practice: base alone runs around $350, a rim starts around $150, CSL pedals another $100, and you’re past $600 before you’ve mounted anything. That’s before the part where Fanatec’s support and shipping reputation went from “annoying” to “actively concerning” through 2024 and the Corsair acquisition. Things have stabilized. But if you’re spending your first $600 on this hobby, you should not also be gambling on an RMA queue.
Moza is a newer brand and people bring that up constantly on r/simracing, usually fairly. Their firmware updates through Pit House have bricked bases for a handful of unlucky people, and their Discord has the tone of a company still figuring out QA. Pedals are where your lap time actually is

The SR-P Lite ships with a potentiometer brake and the load cell is a separate module you swap in. Do it. What you don’t get used to is the seat problem: a stand plus an office chair means the chair rolls backward every time you brake hard, so either lock the casters or wedge it against a wall. The Playseat Challenge X at around $250 to $300 solves seating and folds flat, but it puts you at almost exactly the wrong budget, and the fabric seat has a hammock quality that some people never get past.
If you’re handy, an 80/20 aluminium profile rig starts around $400 empty and will outlast every piece of gear you bolt to it. That’s a next-year purchase, not a first purchase.
The first hour
Unboxing is anticlimactic in a good way. Install Pit House before you plug anything in. Set rotation in Pit House to 900 degrees and leave it. Every serious sim overrides it per-car anyway, and if you set it lower you’ll get a mismatch where the on-screen wheel and your hands disagree, which is more disorienting than it sounds.
Settings worth trying
These are starting points, not gospel. Adjust after ten laps, not after two corners.
- Pit House base settings: FFB strength 100%, Road Sensitivity around 6 to 7, Damping around 5%, Natural Inertia around 10%. Turn Speed Dependent Damping down low or off; it masks exactly the detail you paid for.
- iRacing: use “Wheel Force” mode, enable Auto (not Auto with headroom disabled), and let it sit around 8 to 12 Nm calculated. The base will clip past its 3.9, and that’s fine as long as you’re not clipping constantly. Watch the FFB meter for a lap.
- ACC: Gain 70%, Min Force 0, Dynamic Damping 100%, Road Effects 20%. ACC’s default road effects are a rumble generator, not information.
