If you have $300 to spend and you’re already running a wheel, spend it on a load cell brake and something rigid to bolt everything to. That’s the whole answer. Every other accessory on this page is real and I own or have owned most of them, but nothing else moves your lap times the way a brake pedal that measures pressure instead of travel does, and nothing else ruins gear faster than mounting a direct drive wheel to a desk that wobbles when you sneeze.

1. A load cell brake (or a load cell kit for the pedals you own)
Potentiometer pedals measure how far you push. Load cells measure how hard. Your leg has no idea how far it’s pushed something, but it has extremely good memory for pressure, which is why every person who switches comes back within a week saying their trail braking suddenly makes sense.
The cheapest honest route is a kit for what you already have. Fanatec’s CSL Pedals Load Cell Kit runs around $100 and turns a bundled two-pedal set into something usable. Moza’s SR-P Lite pedals land around $160 to $190 for two pedals with a load cell brake and are the current default recommendation on r/simracing for good reason. The Thrustmaster T-LCM set sits near $200 with three pedals and a genuinely adjustable brake stack. Above that you’re into Heusinkveld Sprint territory at roughly $700, which is a real difference in feel and absolutely not where a second-year sim racer should be spending money.
Setup note that nobody tells you: out of the box the brake will feel like a brick wall and you will lock up constantly. Drop the in-game brake calibration so 100% output happens at a pressure you can hold repeatedly, not the hardest stomp you can manage once. On the Moza set, start with the softest elastomer, drive twenty laps, then decide. In iRacing I set max brake force so I hit ABS threshold in the Mazda MX-5 at Okayama with maybe 70% of my actual leg strength, and my consistency improved more from that one calibration than from a month of practice.

Under $60 and it does three jobs at once: stops the stand creeping forward, saves your floor from the pedal feet, and dampens the low-frequency thud that travels into the room below you if you have neighbours. Any thick rubber-backed sim rig floor mat works. The branded ones with a logo cost double for identical material. Buy on thickness and grip, not the print.
4. If you’re desk-mounted, a reinforcement plate
Cheapest useful thing on this list. A piece of 18mm plywood cut to sit between your wheel clamp and the desk, spanning the clamp width, spreads the load and kills about half the flex. Ten dollars at a hardware store. People spend $400 on a stand when a board and two hours would have carried them another year.
5. Bass shakers and a cheap amp
This is the immersion upgrade I’d actually defend. Not a wind sim. Shakers.
Two Dayton Audio TT25-8 pucks at roughly $30 each, a Fosi or Nobsound class-D amp around $50, and SimHub (a few dollars for the full version) will give you tyre lock and kerb strike and gearshift through the seat frame. The Buttkicker Gamer Plus at about $200 is louder and easier to install and, in my experience, worse at detail because one big transducer smears everything into rumble.
Where it earns its keep: braking. Feeling the front tyre start to skip on turn-in at Zandvoort in the Porsche 992 GT3 R gives you an extra tenth of warning before the ABS light. In SimHub, turn off the RPM effect entirely (it’s a novelty that goes numb in ten minutes) and run road bumps low, wheel slip high, and gear shift as a short punch. Cross over around 30 to 80Hz. Mount the pucks to the seat frame or the pedal plate, never to the floor.
6. A button box
Here’s where the “buy the cheap one” advice actually holds. A generic USB button box from Amazon in the $60 to $120 range with 12 to 32 inputs, a couple of rotary encoders, and toggle switches does exactly what a $400 one does: send button presses. Nothing about a button press benefits from premium components.
Two things to check before ordering. First, does it show as a standard DirectInput device (almost all do, but the no-name ones occasionally need a driver you can’t find). Second, are the toggles momentary or latching? Latching toggles are miserable in iRacing because the sim only reads the change, so your pit limiter and your switch position drift out of sync and you leave the pits with the limiter on at Sebring. Momentary or nothing.
Mount it where your right hand falls naturally. I bolted mine to the side of the wheel deck at roughly hip height and use it for pit presets, TC and brake bias trims in the LMP2 in Le Mans Ultimate, and one big red button for reset-to-pits after I’ve embarrassed myself.
7. A handbrake
Only if you rally, drift, or play GT7 with friends who do. For circuit racing it’s a paperweight. Generic USB handbrakes on Amazon run $60 to $90 and mostly use a potentiometer, which is fine for on/off flick handbrake use in Dirt Rally 2.0. The Moza HBP at around $150 uses a load cell and is worth the difference only if you’re doing progressive handbrake work.
8. A shifter, with conditions
If you drive GT3 and formula cars exclusively, skip it forever. Paddles are correct for those cars and a shifter will just sit there collecting dust and cat hair.
If you drive the Mazda MX-5, older touring cars, road cars in GT7, or historics in rF2, an H-pattern shifter changes the feel of the whole car. The Logitech Driving Force Shifter at around $60 is mediocre and completely adequate. The Thrustmaster TH8S at roughly $150 has a much better gate and a sequential mode. Mount it low and slightly forward, not up on the desk. Desk-height shifters make you reach up like you’re operating a lever in a factory.
9. Tobii Eye Tracker 5
The one item on this list that gets called a gimmick and isn’t. Around $250. It moves your in-game view based on head position and eye direction, which sounds subtle and is transformative for apex vision. Once you’ve had your view drift toward the corner you’re turning into, single-screen racing without it feels like driving with blinkers.
Caveats worth knowing before you order: it needs decent ambient light, glasses can confuse it depending on coating, and you’ll spend a session tuning the sensitivity curves in the Tobii software before it stops feeling seasick. Start with the head-tracking contribution high and eye-tracking contribution low. Triple screen and VR users can ignore this entirely.
10. A monitor arm
A $35 VESA monitor arm clamped to the rig or desk gets your screen closer and lower than any factory stand allows. Closer is faster. A 27-inch panel at arm’s length with a matched in-game FOV (use a calculator, be honest about your measurements, then accept the number even though it looks zoomed in) reads corner entry better than a 34-inch ultrawide sitting two feet further back. That single change is worth more than most $200 accessories.
11. A powered USB hub
Wheel, pedals, shifter, handbrake, button box, shaker amp, Tobii. That’s seven devices. Motherboard USB will start dropping one of them mid-race and you’ll spend a weekend blaming firmware. A $35 powered 7-port hub with its own supply fixes a problem you didn’t know you had. Get one with individual switches so you can power-cycle the wheel without crawling under the desk.
12. Open-back headphones and a separate mic
Gaming headsets are overpriced closed-back headphones with a mic glued on. Philips SHP9500 at about $75 or Sennheiser HD 560S at about $180, plus a $50 Antlion ModMic or a desk mic, gives you better positional audio for hearing a car on your inside at the Turn 1 pack in iRacing. Open-back also means you can hear your own shifter and your doorbell, both of which matter.
13. A heel plate
If your pedals sit on carpet or a bare frame, your heel has nothing to pivot against, so your ankle does all the work and your braking pressure drifts over a stint. A flat aluminium or plywood heel plate bolted level with the pedal base fixes it for $30 or a Saturday afternoon. Underrated. Nobody puts this in listicles because there’s no brand to link.
14. Blue threadlocker and a real hex key set
Loctite 243 costs about $8. Every bolt on a sim rig vibrates loose eventually, and the ones on your pedal plate will do it right before a league race. The bundled Allen keys that ship with rigs round off on the third use. Buy a Wera or Bondhus set for $25 and stop chewing bolt heads.
15. A fan
Not a “wind simulator” at $300. A $30 desk fan pointed at your face. You will sweat during a 40-minute ACC stint, and airflow keeps you sharper in the last ten laps than any accessory here. Mine is a plain black clip fan zip-tied to the monitor arm and it has done more for my race pace than the shakers.
What I’d talk you out of
Wind sims are the clearest example of money that should have gone into pedals. The effect is a fan that changes speed and your face cannot resolve the difference at racing concentration levels.
Expensive gloves fall into the same bucket. A $15 pair of mechanic gloves solves the sweaty-grip problem identically to a $70 pair of Sparcos, unless you specifically want the branded ones, which is fine, just don’t call it performance.
Motion platforms below the $2,000 mark mostly deliver a wobble that fights your reference points rather than reinforcing them. And wireless anything: latency and battery anxiety in exchange for one less cable.
On the brand question people keep arguing about: Fanatec’s shipping and support reputation took a real beating in the pre-Corsair years and the community memory is long, though delivery has stabilised. Moza is newer, moves fast on firmware, and their app updates occasionally break a setting you’d carefully tuned. Neither is a reason to avoid either.

Do I need a load cell brake if I’m only casual? If you race anything with ABS off, yes. If you only play GT7 with assists on a controller-adjacent setup, no, the gain is smaller. The dividing line is whether you brake by feel or by a fixed pedal position.
Will a direct drive wheel damage my desk? An 8Nm wheel on a solid desk with a reinforcement plate is usually fine. On a hollow-core or particleboard desk, the clamp area compresses over months and you get slop that feels like FFB deadzone. Check the tabletop under the clamp after a few weeks. If there’s a dent, get a stand.
How many Nm do I actually need? Most people are happy at 5 to 8Nm and run their FFB at 60 to 70% anyway because full strength is exhausting over a stint. Buying 15Nm and running it at 40% is a common and slightly silly outcome. Spend the difference on pedals.
