If you want one answer and no reading: buy a Moza R9 V2 base, put a mid-range wheel on it, and spend whatever is left on load cell pedals. Around $450 for the base, and it will out-drive wheels costing twice that on every metric a human can actually feel. If you’d rather buy one box and be done, the Moza R5 bundle at roughly $600 gets you a 5.5Nm base, a wheel, and pedals, and it is the least regrettable first purchase in sim racing.
That’s the recommendation. The rest of this is me defending it, and telling you which popular options I think are bad value, because a lot of the “best wheel” lists you just scrolled past were written by people who have never had a base bolted to a desk at 1am wondering why the FFB feels like a washing machine.
Why the R9 sits in the sweet spot
Nine newton-metres is more torque than you will use. I run mine at 60% strength on a rig and I’d run it lower on a desk. What you’re actually buying at this tier isn’t raw force, it’s the resolution underneath it: a direct drive motor has no belt or gears between the motor shaft and your hands, so the tiny stuff arrives intact. In iRacing, the moment that sells it is the Porsche 992 GT3 R going up through the Esses at Watkins Glen. The rear steps out a fraction before the car actually rotates, and on a gear-driven wheel that signal is mush. On a DD base it’s a distinct lightening in your palms, maybe 30ms of warning, and you catch slides you used to spin.
The R9 V2 specifically has held up. Mine has done a couple of hundred hours and the only thing I’ve had to touch is re-seating the quick release once after a hard curb strike at Zandvoort. Build is aluminium, the mounting is standard M8 bottom and side, and the power brick is the usual ugly external lump you’ll want to velcro somewhere out of sight.
Where Moza annoys people: Pit House. The software is fine most of the time and occasionally decides your wheel doesn’t exist until you unplug the USB. Firmware updates land regularly, which is good, but a couple of them over the years have reset people’s profiles or required a full re-calibration of wheel centre. Search the Moza Discord and you’ll find that thread every few months. It’s a five-minute irritation, not a broken product, but if you want appliance-grade software you’re buying the wrong hobby.
What each price bracket actually gets you
Under about $400 you’re choosing between an old belt-driven wheel and an entry DD. Take the DD. A Cammus C5 at roughly $400 or a bare Fanatec CSL DD at 5Nm will both feel more informative than a Logitech G923, which is a gear-driven wheel with a deadzone in the middle you can never fully tune out. The G923 is not a bad object. It’s just 2018 technology at 2026 prices, and the used market has better.
Between $450 and $750 is where the real value lives, and it’s crowded. Moza R9 V2 and R12. Simagic Alpha Mini at around $550 for 10Nm, which some people prefer for its slightly sharper, more mechanical FFB character. Asetek La Prima, 12Nm for about $600, gorgeous machining, smaller accessory catalogue. Any of these will be the last base you need unless you develop a problem.
Above $900, you’re paying for torque you can’t use on a desk and for brand. The Logitech G Pro at around $999 is 11Nm and perfectly decent hardware, but you are paying a large tax for the Logitech name and the console licensing. When it drops to $650 in a sale it becomes interesting. At list price it isn’t.

Stop shopping by newton-metres
The forum obsession with torque is the single biggest waste of money in this hobby. Real GT3 steering, with power assist, sits somewhere in the region of 5 to 10Nm at the rim. A 21Nm base isn’t more realistic, it’s just capable of hurting you, and everyone I know who bought one runs it at 40% and then talks about how good 21Nm is.
What you actually notice going up the range is torque slew rate: how fast the base can go from one force to another. That’s what makes a curb strike feel like a curb strike rather than a soft shove. Higher-end bases are better at it. But the gap between 9Nm and 12Nm is small, and the gap between a belt wheel and any DD is enormous. Spend accordingly.
The other thing nobody puts on the box: your pedals matter more than your base. A load cell brake, where you press against a metal element that measures force rather than travel, is the upgrade that actually drops lap times, because braking is a force task and your leg has no idea how far it has moved. Moza’s SR-P Lite is passable, the full SR-P is good, and a Simagic P1000 or Heusinkveld set is where it gets serious. If you have $700 total and a decent old belt wheel, buy pedals first. I’m aware that’s a strange thing to say in a wheel article.
Your desk is the problem
Direct drive on a flexy desk is a genuinely bad experience and the reason a chunk of buyers post disappointed threads in their first week. The base doesn’t move against a fixed point, it moves against whatever your desk will give it, so every force gets smeared and delayed by a millisecond of wobble. The classic case is an IKEA countertop on thin legs: 9Nm makes the whole thing walk across the floor and your monitor shakes.
Test it before you order. Grab your desk edge where the clamp would sit and shove it hard sideways. If the top twists, you have three options: a wheel stand for around $200, a cheap 8020 rig for $350 and up, or run the base at 40% strength and accept less. Under-desk bracing with a length of steel angle also works and costs nothing if you have a drill and low standards about appearance.
The first hour, and the first month
Unboxing is unremarkable. Base, power brick, USB cable, mounting bolts, an allen key that will strip if you lean on it. Bolt it down properly with all four bottom bolts, not two, because two bolts lets the base pivot under load and you’ll chase a phantom notchiness for a week.
Then, before you drive anything, update the firmware. Every brand ships stock from a warehouse with old firmware and half the “my wheel feels weird” posts trace back to this. Set your wheel angle calibration once with the wheel physically centred.
Things that surface after a week or two: quick release play. Every QR develops a tiny bit of rotational slop eventually, and you’ll hear it as a click at the exact moment of turn-in. Fanatec’s plastic QR1 on the CSL DD is the well-known offender and the metal QR2 upgrade runs over $100, which is a fairly cheeky ask for a part that should have been metal to begin with. Moza’s aluminium QR is better out of the box but still wants its grub screw checked every few months.
Things that surface after a year: nothing on the base, usually. DD motors are simple. It’s the peripherals that die. Pedal potentiometers on budget sets get scratchy, USB cables get flaky at the plug, and rim buttons on cheap add-ons stop registering. Keep the box for a while; return windows and warranty claims are the real difference between brands.
About Fanatec
Fanatec makes good hardware. Their support reputation was, for years, genuinely poor: tickets going weeks unanswered, RMAs disappearing into a void, preorders shipping months late. The Corsair acquisition has improved availability and the situation is not what it was in 2023. But the community memory is long for a reason, and if you’re buying from outside their main shipping regions I’d still weight that risk.
Buy Fanatec if you’re on Xbox or you’re already invested in their wheels. On PC, with a clean slate, Moza or Simagic gives you more base for the money.
Console buyers get the worse deal
This is the one place I can’t give you a clean answer, because licensing changes and I’d rather you check than trust a page you found at night. Xbox has historically been Fanatec’s territory, with the CSL DD Xbox variant being the affordable entry. PlayStation has more competition now: Fanatec’s GT DD Pro, the Thrustmaster T598 at around $500 with wheel and pedals included, and Moza’s licensed bases.
Verify the exact SKU is licensed for your console before you order. The bases are often physically identical with different firmware, and buying the PC version by accident is a miserable afternoon.
Settings worth typing in tonight
Whatever you buy, set the base driver output to 100% and control strength inside the sim. Two gain stages fighting each other is how you get clipping you can’t diagnose.
In iRacing, use the auto-calculate force button, but do it on a fast corner exit with the car loaded, not sitting in the pits. Damping zero. Min force zero, because min force exists to mask gear-driven deadzones and a DD base doesn’t have one.
In ACC, gain around 65%, min force 0, dynamic damping 100%, road effects around 20%. ACC’s road effects are largely synthetic and cranking them past 40% buries the tyre information under noise.
Rotation: 900 degrees for road cars, 400ish for GT3, 360 for formula. Most sims will set this automatically if you enable per-car rotation in your driver software, and you should.
Le Mans Ultimate and rF2 both run hot on default FFB. Drop the per-car multiplier until the wheel stops slamming over Sebring’s bumps, then add smoothing of 2 or 3 if the electrical noise bothers you.
FAQ
Is 5Nm enough? Yes, for a desk. It’s enough for most rigs too. You’ll want more eventually the way you want a bigger monitor eventually, not because the small one was broken.
Should I buy used? Bases, yes, confidently. They have almost nothing to wear out and a used R9 or CSL DD at 60% of retail is a good buy. Used pedals, be more careful, and used wheels with load cell paddles, check the paddles work before money changes hands.
Do I need a shifter and handbrake? Not for GT3 and formula racing, which is most of what people actually do. If you rally or drift, a handbrake is the better of the two. H-pattern shifters are mostly bought, used for a month on historic cars, then left on the floor.
Before you order
Do one thing tonight: go put both hands on your desk where the wheel would clamp and try to twist it. If it moves, budget $200 for a stand before you budget another 3Nm.
Then buy the Moza R9 V2 if you’re on PC and want the most capable base per dollar, the Moza R5 bundle if you want one box with pedals included and no decisions, or a Fanatec CSL DD if you’re on Xbox and have made peace with the support lottery. Skip the G923. Skip anything over 12Nm unless you already own a rig you can’t shake.
