Get a 27-inch 1440p IPS panel that runs 165Hz or better, pay around $200, and close the other fourteen tabs. That covers maybe four out of five people typing this search at midnight. The LG 27GS75Q and the pile of near-identical panels around it (Gigabyte M27Q, MSI G274QPF-QD, AOC Q27G3XMN) sit at the exact point where the price-to-usefulness curve goes flat. Spend more and you’re buying things that don’t make you faster.
Here’s what I’d actively talk you out of: 4K at this budget, anything advertising 240Hz for under $250, a 32-inch VA panel if you race at night, and a $300 ultrawide bought before you’ve sorted out where it’s going to physically live. Every one of those is a common budget-tier mistake, and I’ve made three of them.
Refresh rate is the only spec that changes your driving
Resolution changes how the game looks. Refresh rate changes how it feels, and in a sim that difference is measurable in your inputs.
Going from 60Hz to 144Hz+ is the single biggest visual upgrade in sim racing, and it’s not close. At 60Hz, catching a snap of oversteer in a GT3 car means reacting to information that’s already 16ms stale, plus panel processing, plus whatever your wheel is doing. At 165Hz that same slide gives you noticeably more usable frames of warning. It’s not placebo. Put a rookie in a Mazda MX-5 at Okayama on a 60Hz office panel, then swap them to 144Hz, and their spin count at the final hairpin drops within a session.
Above roughly 165Hz the returns fall off a cliff for most people. There are aliens on 240Hz and 360Hz panels who’d argue, and I’d believe them about their own driving, but they’re also holding 240fps in a 40-car field, which you are not going to do on a budget build. A 240Hz monitor fed 90fps is a 90Hz monitor that cost you an extra hundred bucks.
Which brings up the part the spec sheets don’t cover: what can your GPU actually push? iRacing is light and old and will happily hold 165fps at 1440p on something like an RTX 3060. ACC is a Unreal Engine 4 game that hates full grids, and a night race at Spa with 25 cars will pull a 4060 down into the 90s on mid settings. Le Mans Ultimate is CPU-bound and will disappoint you on any GPU, which is its own conversation. Buy the monitor for the sim you actually race.
The size and distance math nobody does
This is where people waste money. In a rig, your eyes end up somewhere between 60cm and 75cm from the screen. That’s much closer than a desk setup, and it changes everything about what screen size makes sense.
A 27-inch 16:9 panel is about 23.5 inches wide. Sit 24 inches back and your correct horizontal field of view is roughly 52 degrees. Sit 27 inches back and it’s about 46. Those are the numbers iRacing wants in its FOV field, and if you plug them in for the first time you will hate it. Correct FOV on a single 27 looks like racing through a mail slot. You lose the mirrors, you lose peripheral awareness, you can’t see the car diving up your inside.
Almost everyone compromises. I run around 55 on a single screen and accept the mild fish-eye, because knowing there’s a car there matters more to me than perfect scale. The FOV police on r/simracing will tell you this is heresy and that your braking references will never be consistent. They have a point about braking markers. They also have a point I’ve stopped listening to.
What this means for buying: going from 27 to 32 inches at the same distance doesn’t give you more information, it just makes everything bigger and forces you further back or to accept an even wider FOV. A 32-inch 1440p panel is also only about 93 PPI, which at 65cm is fine but starts showing its pixels on distant curbing. I’d take the 27 at 1440p over the 32 at 1440p in a rig, every time. On a desk where you sit further back, the 32 makes more sense.

The AOC 24G2SP deserves a note because it’s been the budget default for years and it earns it. Genuinely good overdrive tuning for the money, real 165Hz over DisplayPort, proper VESA mounts, and it’s cheap enough that buying three of them is a plausible plan. If you know you want triples eventually, buying one now and matching it later is smarter than buying a 27 you’ll orphan.
The Samsung Odyssey G5 32-inch is the one I keep going back and forth on. The 1000R curve at rig distance is genuinely nice, the price is silly for the size, and in daylight racing it looks great. Then you run a night stint at Le Mans in LMU, come under the Dunlop bridge, and every dark-on-dark transition smears into mud. VA response times in the low end of the gamma curve are still bad in 2026, and no amount of overdrive fixes it without introducing halos instead. If you mostly race daytime GT3 and open-wheel, ignore me and buy it. If you do endurance, don’t.
Triples, ultrawide, or one good screen
The eternal thread. Here’s my read after running all three.
Triple 24-inch 1080p is the best racing experience per dollar, full stop. Peripheral vision in traffic is a real competitive advantage, not just immersion, and iRacing’s native triple-screen geometry (once you’ve forced Nvidia Surround or AMD Eyefinity into presenting one big display) renders each panel at its correct angle instead of stretching one image across three. ACC and LMU handle it properly too.
The costs people forget: three 1080p screens is 6.2 megapixels versus 1440p’s 3.7, so your GPU is doing considerably more work at lower visual quality. A decent triple mount runs $150 to $350. You need about 63 inches of width and a rig or desk that won’t turn into a diving board. And Surround setup is still an evening of your life you don’t get back, with the added joy of it dropping out every time Windows updates a display driver.
Ultrawide 34-inch at 3440x1440 splits the difference: roughly 5 megapixels, one cable, no bezels, no Surround. In ACC and iRacing it’s lovely. In Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 it’s a waste, because GT7 doesn’t render 21:9 and just pillarboxes you into 16:9 with black bars. GT7 does support triple screens on PS5, which is a strange asymmetry, but there it is. If you’re a console racer, ultrawide is money set on fire.
And yes, someone in the comments will say get a Quest 3 for around $500 instead. VR is genuinely the best-feeling option and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. It’s also sweaty, awkward with glasses, means you can’t see your own wheel or your drink, and about half the people who buy one for sim racing quietly go back to a screen within three months. That’s not an argument against it. It’s an argument for not selling your monitor first.
The first week: settings, and what starts annoying you
Out of the box, budget panels are configured for a showroom floor. Expect to spend twenty minutes fixing that.
Set Windows to the native refresh rate manually. Windows defaults new displays to 60Hz constantly and people race for weeks without noticing. Use DisplayPort, not HDMI, because most panels in this bracket cap HDMI at 120 or 144Hz even when the marketing says 180. Turn FreeSync on in the OSD, because it’s frequently off by default, and it earns its keep on an iRacing rolling start at Daytona where the framerate craters as 40 cars come into view.
Overdrive is the setting that separates a good cheap monitor from a bad one. Set it to Medium or Fast, never Fastest or Extreme. The top setting on nearly every budget IPS produces overshoot, which shows up as bright halos trailing behind white curbing against dark tarmac. Once you’ve seen it at Eau Rouge you can’t unsee it.
Kill HDR. HDR400 with no local dimming isn’t HDR, it just raises black levels and makes night racing look washed out.
Brightness wants to be much lower than factory. I run somewhere around 30% for evening sessions, which is roughly 120-140 nits. Racing at 100% brightness in a dark room is why your eyes hurt after a two-hour endurance stint.
The annoyances that surface later: OSD joystick placement (some brands put it dead centre behind the panel where you can’t reach it past a rig upright), backlight bleed in the corners that you’ll only notice on a Nordschleife night lap, and stand wobble. That last one is real. A direct drive wheel putting out 8Nm through a desk-mounted rig transmits enough vibration that a cheap monitor stand will visibly shimmy in kerb-heavy sections. Mount the screen to the rig, not the desk, or use a proper clamp arm.
Before you order anything: confirm it has 100x100 VESA holes. A handful of the cheapest Sceptre and KOORUI panels don’t, and a monitor you can’t mount to a rig is a monitor you’ll be replacing.
What I’d skip entirely
4K at this budget. You will run it at 1440p to hold framerate, and 1440p on a 4K panel looks worse than 1440p on a 1440p panel because of non-integer scaling.
No-name 240Hz panels with specs that seem impossible for $170. The panel might be fine. The scaler, the overdrive tuning, and the FreeSync range usually aren’t, and the RMA process is a Gmail address.
“Motion blur reduction” as a buying reason. It halves brightness, usually disables VRR, and most people turn it off within a week.
FAQ
Is 1080p still fine for sim racing? Yes, especially at 24 inches where the pixel density is decent. You’ll notice aliasing on distant trackside objects and struggle a bit to read car numbers at range, which matters in traffic. But nobody has ever lost a race to 1080p. If your GPU is a 1660 Super or similar, 1080p at 144Hz is the right call over 1440p at 80.
Do I actually need G-Sync or FreeSync? Need, no. Want, yes. In sims that hold a steady framerate it does very little. In ACC or a packed iRacing start where you’re dipping between 80 and 140fps, VRR removes the tearing and the stutter that comes with it. Every panel worth buying in this bracket has FreeSync, and it works on Nvidia cards too, so it’s a non-decision.
Can I just use a 4K TV? People do, and it’s the cheapest way to get a big screen. Two problems: most TVs have significantly higher input lag than a monitor even in Game Mode, and at rig distance a 43-inch screen forces you into a wide FOV that distorts everything at the edges. If you already own one, try it. Don’t buy one for this.

Do that test in a dark room with a full-black image and a night session at Spa. If the corners glow like a campfire, send it back. Panel lottery is real, and the only defense is a receipt you can still use.
