Best Budget PC for Sim Racing (Prebuilt and Parts)

A sim racer's real budget PC answer: an $900-ish parts list, which prebuilts are actually fine, and the specs you can skip for iRacing and ACC.

Here’s the answer up front, because you searched this at 1am and don’t need another 4,000-word stall: around $850 to $950 in parts, or roughly $1,000 to $1,100 for a prebuilt you won’t regret, gets you a PC that runs iRacing, ACC, and Le Mans Ultimate at 1080p or 1440p on a single high-refresh monitor, smoothly, with a full grid. The specific parts build I’d do today is a Ryzen 5 7600 (or the cheaper Ryzen 5 7500F if you can find it), a B650 board, 32GB of DDR5-6000, and either an Intel Arc B580 or an RTX 5060 depending on what’s on sale. On the prebuilt side, a Lenovo Legion Tower 5 with an RTX 5060 is the one I point people to most.

That number is lower than what r/simracing will tell you. The community default answer to every PC question is “7800X3D,” delivered with the confidence of people spending your money, and it’s genuinely a monster chip for sims. It’s also $300+ of CPU that a beginner on one 1080p monitor does not need. You can add an X3D chip to an AM5 board in two years when you’ve bought triples and actually hit a CPU wall. Why sim racing is a weird PC workload

Sim racing punishes PCs differently than normal gaming, and this is where most generic “budget gaming PC” lists steer you wrong.

Racing sims are CPU-heavy in a way shooters aren’t. iRacing in particular is an old, largely single-threaded engine, so it cares about how fast one core is, not how many cores you have. A 12-core chip with mediocre single-thread speed loses to a 6-core with good speed. ACC gets ugly on the CPU when you’re mid-pack at Spa with 25 AI cars, because the physics and AI for every car on track has to be simulated somewhere. Le Mans Ultimate inherited rFactor 2’s engine and its habit of tanking frame rate at a full multiclass race start no matter what GPU you own.

The other thing: frame time consistency matters more here than raw frames. A shooter at 90fps with occasional stutter is playable. A sim at 90fps with stutter will make you miss braking points, because your eye is doing continuous speed judgment. This is why a modest, well-balanced build beats a lopsided one with a huge GPU and a weak CPU. A few notes on why, because the picks aren’t random.

The 7600 over anything Intel at this price: AM5 is the upgrade path. Drop-in X3D chip later, no new board, no new RAM. That future upgrade is the actual answer to “but what about triples,” and it’s why I’d rather you spend $170 now than $350.

On RAM, I’m sorry. Memory prices went stupid in late 2025 when the AI datacenter buildout started eating the world’s DDR5 supply, and they haven’t fully recovered. If 32GB is painful when you price it, 16GB in two sticks will run every current sim fine; iRacing is not a memory hog. What you cannot do is run one stick. Single-channel memory can cost you double-digit percent performance in CPU-bound games, which sims are, and it’s the most common thing wrong with cheap prebuilts.

The GPU pick deserves a paragraph because it’s where people overspend. On a single 1080p or 1440p monitor, the Arc B580 at around $250 is quietly the best value in the segment, and its 12GB of VRAM ages better than the 8GB on the base RTX 5060. Intel’s drivers were a mess at Arc’s launch in 2022; by now they’re fine for every major sim, though you’ll still find one guy in every Discord who had a bad week with them in 2023 and will never let it go. If you’d rather have zero driver anxiety, the 5060 is the safe pick. The RX 9060 XT 16GB at around $350 is the “I might do VR eventually” pick. Past that, stop. A $600 GPU feeding a single 1080p monitor in iRacing is a space heater with a hobby.

The Peerless Assassin is on the list because the 7600’s stock cooler is loud under load, and a quiet PC matters more in this hobby than most. You’ll be running FFB motors and pedal springs a foot from your ears. You don’t need the fan noise too.

The HP Victus 15L is the tempting one, because it shows up at Costco and Walmart for $800 with a current GPU and the forum threads about it never end. The catalog of sins: a 500W bronze PSU with a proprietary connector on some units, a single stick of RAM in most configs, and a cramped case. It will run iRacing today without drama. It will fight you the day you try to put a bigger GPU in it. If the price gap to a Legion is $250 or more, take the Victus, order a second matching RAM stick the same day (about $40, ten-minute install, two clips and it’s in), and accept that this box is a four-year appliance rather than a platform. If the gap is under $150, get the Legion.

Whichever prebuilt you buy, budget your first evening for cleanup. Uninstall the vendor bloatware, especially anything with “Game Hub” or “OMEN” in the name that wants to manage your performance for you. Check Task Manager’s memory tab to confirm two sticks in dual channel. Turn on XMP/EXPO, because system integrators frequently ship with it off too. Then update the GPU driver from NVIDIA or AMD directly, not from Windows Update, which will happily hand you a driver from eight months ago.

One more prebuilt-specific check that nobody thinks about until the boxes arrive: count the DisplayPort outputs. If triples are anywhere in your future, you want three DP ports on the card itself, not two DP and an HDMI you’ll be adapter-ing around.

The $600 escape hatch

If even $900 isn’t happening, used is the move, and it’s a better market than pride suggests. A used office-tower-plus-GPU Franken-build is miserable to live with, skip that. But a used RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT for around $200 on your local marketplace, dropped into the new AM5 platform above, gets you 90% of the way there. Or buy someone’s whole abandoned 2021 build; every city’s marketplace has a Ryzen 5600X / 3060 Ti system listed by a guy who “just doesn’t have time to game anymore” for $500. That machine runs iRacing at 1080p high refresh right now, today. iRacing’s system requirements have barely moved in a decade. It’s the rest of your rig that got expensive.

If you have a Micro Center within driving distance, go. Their CPU-plus-board-plus-RAM bundles routinely knock $100 or more off the build above, and it’s the one retail experience in this hobby that consistently feels like cheating.

Settings that make a budget PC feel expensive

Hardware is half of it. The rest is not asking a $900 PC to do dumb things.

In iRacing, cap your frame rate. Uncapped, the sim will happily render 300fps in clear air and then dip hard in traffic, and that swing is what feels bad. Cap at just under your refresh (141 on a 144Hz panel), set max cars visible to something like 20, and pull the crowd and shadow-map settings down; nobody has ever noticed the crowds at Okayama while catching a slide. On this class of hardware you’ll hold that cap through a full Mazda field into turn 1.

ACC: drop opponent visibility to around 20, mirror resolution to low, and be realistic about the epic weather settings. Rain at Zandvoort with full grids is a top-tier GPU’s problem.

Le Mans Ultimate: expect the race-start dip regardless of hardware, because everyone gets it, and don’t chase it with settings changes that wreck the other 99% of your stint. It clears within a lap as the field spreads.

And close Chrome. Twenty tabs of setup guides and a YouTube video on the second monitor is a real, measurable frame-time cost on a 6-core CPU. The number of “stutter fixed” threads that end in “it was Chrome” is humbling.

Can iRacing really run on a cheap PC? Yes, and better than its reputation suggests. The engine is old and mostly single-threaded, so a current $170 CPU handles it easily on one screen. Where iRacing gets hungry is triples and VR, where the same old engine suddenly needs to render three or two viewpoints and the CPU cost balloons. One monitor: cheap PC. Three monitors: different article, different budget.

Is a gaming laptop okay for sim racing? It works, and plenty of people race on one, but I’d talk you out of buying one for this purpose. You lose the upgrade path entirely, you pay a premium for a screen and keyboard you won’t use in the rig, thermals throttle long sessions, and USB ports fill up fast once a wheelbase, pedals, and a button box show up. A $1,100 laptop performs like a $700 desktop. If you already own the laptop, race on it and spend the money on a load-cell brake instead; the lap time is in the pedals anyway.

What do I actually need for triples or VR? Roughly double the GPU budget and the strongest single-core CPU you can justify, which is where the 7800X3D advice stops being overkill and starts being correct. Triples at 1080p is the gentlest step up; a Quest 3 running iRacing at 90Hz is the deep end. Whatever you order, check four things first: two sticks of RAM, not one; a name-brand PSU of 550W or more, no proprietary connectors; at least 8GB of VRAM, with 12GB preferred; and three DisplayPort outputs if triples are even a maybe. Miss those and no spec sheet number will save you. Get them right and this hobby’s next painful purchase won’t be a PC. It’ll be the second monitor, then the third.
