The cheapest setup worth owning right now is a Logitech G29/G920 (or the newer G923) bought used for $130 to $180, clamped to a desk you already own, with a Thrustmaster T-LCM or a load cell brake mod added a few months later when the stock brake starts to annoy you. Total: under $200 to get racing, maybe $350 by the time it’s actually good. That’s the answer. Everything below is why, and what you’d be buying instead if you spent more.
If you want the answer that costs slightly more but ages better: a Moza R3 bundle at around $400 gets you a real direct drive base with 3.9 Nm and Moza’s entry pedals, which puts you two tiers up in feel for roughly double the money. Whether that’s worth it depends entirely on your desk, which is a sentence I will keep repeating because it’s the thing nobody tells beginners.
Why used gear-driven wheels are still the correct first buy
There’s a loud contingent on r/simracing that will tell you to skip gear-driven wheels entirely and save for direct drive. They’re wrong for most people, and the reason is simple: you don’t yet know if you like this.
Sim racing has a brutal drop-off rate. Loads of people buy a wheel, do six hours of Gran Turismo 7, discover that driving properly is frustrating rather than relaxing, and the box goes in a cupboard. A used G29 costs you almost nothing in depreciation because it already took the hit. If you quit, you sell it for what you paid. If you stay, you’ve learned enough about your own preferences to spend the next $600 intelligently instead of buying whatever a YouTube sponsor told you.
The G29 is a genuinely mediocre piece of hardware and I say that having owned one for two years. The force feedback is gear-driven, so you feel a faint notchiness when the wheel crosses centre, and there’s a dead zone in the middle where the gears take up slack before anything happens. Under about 5% of steering input you’re basically driving blind. It’s also loud. Not “hmm, a noise” loud. Your housemates will know exactly when you clip a kerb at Spa.
But it does the one thing that matters: it tells you what the front tyres are doing. Understeer arrives as the wheel going light in your hands, and that single piece of information is the difference between guessing and driving. Every skill you build on a G29 transfers directly to a $1,200 rig later.
The first hour, realistically
Unboxing is fine. The clamp is a plastic screw mechanism that bites into your desk edge, and it works, though on a thin IKEA tabletop it’ll leave a mark. Put a folded tea towel under it.
The part nobody warns you about is that the pedals slide. They are a light plastic tray with rubber feet designed for carpet, and on a hard floor they will migrate away from you every few corners until you’re braking with your leg fully extended. The fix costs nothing: shove them against a wall, a skirting board, or the crossbar of your desk. On carpet they’re mostly fine.
Software-wise, install G HUB and immediately turn off the “Operating Range” default. Set rotation to 900 degrees and let each sim override it per car. In iRacing, set the strength to auto once per car, then knock it down about 10% from whatever it suggests, because the G29 clips (loses detail at the top end) well before it runs out of nominal force. In Assetto Corsa Competizione, gain around 70%, minimum force 4 to 6%, and dynamic damping low. Those aren’t magic numbers, but they’re a sane starting point rather than the mush you get out of the box.
Give it three sessions before you judge anything. The first drive on a wheel is genuinely worse than a controller because your inputs are now analogue and your brain hasn’t caught up. Everyone spins at Turn 1. The second week is when it clicks.
The brake pedal is the actual upgrade, not the wheel
This is the thing I’d tattoo on beginners. Your stock potentiometer brake measures how far you push the pedal. Your right foot in a real car measures how hard you push. Those are different sports.
A load cell brake reads pressure, which means you can learn a repeatable braking point by feel rather than by staring at a telemetry bar. The first week after I fitted one, my braking consistency in ACC went from “somewhere in a 15 metre window” to “same marker every lap.” No wheel upgrade has ever given me that much lap time for that little money.
Options, cheapest first:
- A load cell mod kit for the G29 pedal set (various small brands sell these for $60 to $90) replaces the brake spring assembly. Fiddly install, maybe 40 minutes with a screwdriver, plenty of YouTube guides.

Do this before you buy a better wheel. I’m serious. A G29 with a load cell brake is a better racing tool than a direct drive base with mushy stock pedals, and it’s about a third of the price.
Where the money actually goes if you skip the used route
If you’d rather buy new and only buy once, here’s what the tiers look like in mid-2026. Prices move constantly, so treat these as ballpark.

The R3 is the interesting one. Direct drive at $400 was unthinkable three years ago, and Moza got there by keeping the torque modest and the wheel rim cheap. 3.9 Nm sounds weak next to the 8 Nm and 12 Nm numbers people brag about, and here’s the thing nobody says out loud: 8 Nm is more than most people can hold for a 40 minute stint anyway. I run my 12 Nm base at about 60% and I’m not unusual.
What you gain from even 3.9 Nm of direct drive is not strength. It’s detail and speed. No gears, no belt, no slack. The wheel reacts the instant the tyre does, and rumble strips, kerb texture, and the front end letting go all arrive as distinct sensations instead of one vague wobble.
The desk problem, which is not optional to think about
Direct drive wheels apply their torque to whatever they’re bolted to. If that’s a hollow-core desk with a clamp, the desk becomes part of the force feedback system, and it flexes. You’ll feel a soft, delayed, boingy quality where sharp detail should be, and you will blame the wheel.
This kills more budget direct drive purchases than any hardware fault. Someone spends $600 on an R5, clamps it to a $70 desk, and concludes that direct drive is overrated.
Check before you order:
- Is your desk solid wood or thick MDF, at least 22mm, with legs that don’t rock when you shove the tabletop?
- Can you clamp near a leg rather than mid-span?
- Is there a crossbar or drawer unit that stops the whole thing sliding under braking?
If the answer to those is no, budget another $150 to $250 for a wheel stand (the Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0 and similar) or, better, skip the stand and go straight to a used aluminium profile rig off Facebook Marketplace. Rigs are enormous and boring to ship, so people sell them cheap locally. I bought my second one for £180 including seat.
A G29 does not care about any of this. Clamp it to a coffee table if you want. That’s another quiet argument for starting cheap.
Things people argue about that don’t matter yet
Torque numbers. Covered above. Between 5 and 8 Nm is plenty for anything short of a hardcore GT3 diet, and above that you’re mostly buying bragging rights and a stronger mount requirement.
Whether you need a shifter. You don’t. Nearly all modern race cars in every sim use paddles, and the H-pattern shifters at this price point (the Logitech Driving Force Shifter at around $60) feel like stirring a spoon in porridge. Buy it later if you get into older cars or rally.
Handbrakes. Rally only. Skip.
Triple monitors. This is the money pit. A single 27 inch screen at 1440p is completely fine, and if you eventually want immersion, a used VR headset (Quest 3 or a Reverb G2 if you can find one) does more for your sense of speed and spatial awareness than three screens for less money. VR gives you real depth perception, which genuinely helps with braking points and car placement in traffic.
Fanatec. Their hardware is very good. Their customer service and shipping have been a running community complaint for years, and the company went through a well-documented financial wobble that spooked a lot of people. Things have stabilised somewhat under new ownership, but if you’re spending your first $600 and you’d be annoyed by a six week wait or a warranty claim that goes quiet, Moza is the lower-stress choice. Moza is newer and their software has had rough patches, but their RMA turnaround has been the better story lately.
A sensible upgrade path over two years
Buy the used G29 for $150. Race for two months. If you’re still going, add a load cell brake for around $150 to $200, which is the single biggest improvement available to you at any price. Race for another six months.
By then you’ll know whether you’re a casual GT7 person (in which case, stop, you’re done, you have everything you need) or someone who’s genuinely into iRacing rookies and thinking about a licence progression. If it’s the latter, sell the G29 for $120, buy a Moza R5 or CSL DD bundle for around $600, keep the pedals you already upgraded, and mount it properly.
Total across two years: roughly $850, spread out, with no wasted purchase. Compare that to spending $1,200 on day one and discovering in March that you actually prefer flight sims.
FAQ
Can I just use a controller? Yes, and plenty of very fast people do, especially in GT7 and Forza. A controller with good settings will get you within a couple of tenths of wheel pace in most arcade-leaning sims. Where it falls apart is iRacing, ACC, and Le Mans Ultimate, where the physics assume analogue steering input and the controller assist filters fight you. If your budget is genuinely zero right now, drive on the controller and learn the tracks. Track knowledge is free and transfers perfectly.
Is the G923 worth the extra over a used G29? Not really. TrueForce (the added high-frequency vibration effect) is a nice touch in the handful of games that support it well, and the wheel is a bit quieter, but the fundamental gear-driven feel is the same. If a G923 is $350 new and a G29 is $150 used, put the $200 difference into pedals. You’ll feel it far more.
Which sim should I start with if I’m buying cheap? Assetto Corsa (the original, often under $10 on sale) with a couple of mods, or Gran Turismo 7 if you’re on PlayStation. Skip iRacing until you’re sure, because the subscription plus content purchases turns into a real monthly cost and the rookie races are a demolition derby. Le Mans Ultimate has the best current physics in my view, but the content is thin and the multiplayer is quiet outside of scheduled events.

Check your desk. Push down hard on the front edge with both hands. If it moves more than a few millimetres or you hear the joints creak, don’t buy a direct drive wheel yet: buy the used G29 and put the difference toward a rig or a stand.
