GRIP XR is no more, at least in name. The combat racing project has been rebranded as GRIP 2: Combat Racing Evolved, and the new title arrives alongside a fresh playable demo that anyone curious can get their hands on.
The headline addition is a level editor. Rather than just offering a slice of the racing itself, the demo lets players build their own content, which says a fair bit about where the project is heading. A combat racer lives or dies on track variety, and handing the tools to the community early is one way to keep that supply going long after the developers’ own circuits have been learned by heart.
The name change is worth noting too. Dropping the “XR” tag in favour of a straightforward numbered sequel positions this as a full follow-up rather than a side project or spin-off. Beyond the rename, the demo and the editor, the details are thin for now, so we’ll hold off on guessing at release timing, platforms or the full feature list until there’s something concrete to report.
Why does this matter to sim racers? Honestly, it mostly doesn’t in the strict sense. GRIP 2 is a combat racer, with weapons and arcade speed instead of tyre models and setup sheets, and nobody should be expecting it to replace their usual league night. But plenty of us keep something lighter installed for the evenings when a full practice-qualifying-race session feels like work, and a free demo is a no-risk way to find out whether this fills that slot. The level editor is the part worth watching: user-made content has kept many racing games alive well past their expected shelf life, and the sim crowd knows better than most how much a healthy creator scene is worth.
If you’re curious, the demo is out now. Try it and judge for yourself.
