Traxion has gone hands-on with the VR update for Assetto Corsa EVO, and the verdict is cautiously positive: it’s a real step forward, but the work isn’t finished.
That framing matters, because VR support has been one of the sorest points for EVO since it landed in early access. Kunos shipped the game without it, then added it later, and the reception at the time was mixed enough that plenty of headset owners simply went back to Assetto Corsa Competizione or the original AC and waited. Traxion’s take on the latest update is that things have genuinely improved — enough to be worth revisiting — while stopping short of calling it solved. Their words, roughly: this is early access, and further refinement in future updates would be welcome.
That’s a reasonable place to land, and it’s more or less the story of EVO as a whole so far. The bones are interesting. The delivery has been staggered. Anyone who bought in at launch expecting a finished product has spent the intervening months watching features arrive one at a time, VR among them.
Why it matters: VR isn’t a niche add-on in sim racing anymore, it’s how a substantial chunk of the community drives. A sim that treats headset support as a post-launch bolt-on is asking a meaningful slice of its audience to sit out. If EVO’s VR mode is now merely good rather than actively frustrating, that’s progress worth noting — but “improved” and “competitive with iRacing or ACC in VR” are different claims, and nobody’s making the second one yet.
If you own EVO and shelved it because VR wasn’t there, this is probably the update that justifies reinstalling. If you’ve been waiting to buy until the VR side is properly sorted, the honest read is that it still isn’t — it’s just closer than it was.
