Project Motor Racing is giving players a dedicated sandbox to poke around in before the racing gets serious. Straight4 and Giants Software have confirmed the game’s Test Centre goes live on 9th July, an open proving ground built for exploration as much as competition.
The idea is simple enough: rather than dropping you onto a circuit and leaving you to it, the Test Centre is a varied environment you can wander through at your own pace, feeling out the physics and getting a read on how the cars behave. It’s not purely a free-roam curiosity, though. Six fixed layouts are baked in, so once you’re done experimenting you can actually string together laps and race on properly defined circuits within the same space.
That’s about the extent of what’s confirmed right now, and we’re not going to pad it out with guesses about scale or content that haven’t been stated.
Why it matters to sim racers: a proper test facility is one of those features that sounds minor until you’ve lived without it. Being able to shake down a setup, learn a car’s limits, or just get your bearings without the pressure of a session clock is genuinely useful, and it’s the kind of thing dedicated sims have quietly needed more of. Whether Project Motor Racing’s version delivers on feel is something we’ll only know with a wheel in hand, but the intent — a low-stakes place to learn the car before you commit to a race — is the right one. With launch drawing closer, the Test Centre landing on 9th July gives an early, low-commitment window to see how the driving model actually holds up.
