Thrustmaster T818 vs Moza R9 compared by someone who has run both: torque, FFB feel, mounting, software quirks, and which one to actually buy.

Buy the Moza R9. If you already own Thrustmaster wheels you love and refuse to give them up, the Thrustmaster T818 is a defensible purchase, but that is the only scenario where it wins, and even then you should count the cost of the adapter and the wheels you keep before you commit. The R9 is cheaper, its force feedback is cleaner at the top of the range, the base is smaller and easier to mount, and Moza’s software has stopped being the liability it was in 2022.

That is the answer. The rest of this is why, plus the stuff that only shows up after you have lived with both for a while.

What you’re actually comparing

The T818 is a 10 Nm direct drive base that launched at $649.99 in late 2022 and now sits closer to $600 bare, or around $750 to $800 bundled with a wheel. It uses Thrustmaster’s proprietary quick release, so the only rims that attach out of the box are Thrustmaster’s own (including the older TM ones like the Ferrari 488 GT3 and the Formula Wheel Add-On), and there’s a T818 “Rim Adapter” that you need for the older quick-release wheels. The base is a chunky black unit with an aluminium case, a lighting strip, and a fan.

The Moza R9 is a 9 Nm direct drive base, first version launched at $439, and the V2 refresh now around $400 to $440 depending on sales. Moza’s quick release is their own too, but Moza also sells an adapter that lets you mount third-party 70 mm bolt-pattern rims, which opens the door to Cube Controls, Ascher, Gomez and everything else in the aftermarket. The base is compact enough that you can hide it behind a 300 mm rim and forget it’s there.

One Newton-metre of difference is meaningless. I’ll get to that.

First hour: unboxing and mounting

Thrustmaster ships the T818 with a proper base plate, T-slot rails and screws for a rig, plus a desk clamp option. The clamp works. It’s a beefy piece of cast metal and it clamps a 2-inch desk edge without much fuss. The problem is not the clamp, it’s the desk. Ten Newton-metres is enough to make a normal IKEA table walk across the floor at 35% strength during a big ACC curb strike. Every “the T818 feels notchy” complaint I’ve seen from a desk user turned out to be flex in the table, not the motor. If you have not got the base bolted to something that doesn’t move, you are not reviewing the base, you’re reviewing your furniture.

The R9 ships with a smaller footprint (roughly 130 mm wide against the T818’s 200-ish mm) and bottom plus front-mount hole patterns that suit most rigs. A desk clamp is a separate purchase, around $35 to $40, and it’s fine. Because the R9 is lighter and the motor housing is smaller, it does less damage to a marginal desk than the T818 does, but the same warning applies. Direct drive wants an aluminium profile rig or at least a wheel stand bolted to the floor. Budget for that before you budget for the wheel.

Software setup on the Moza side means installing Pit House, updating firmware (there will be a firmware update waiting, there is always one waiting), and creating a per-game profile. The T818 wants the Thrustmaster Panel plus the Thrustmaster firmware updater, and on the day I first plugged mine in the firmware updater refused to see the base until I moved it from a USB hub to a rear motherboard port. Both bases wanted around 20 minutes of fiddling before they were racing. Neither is worse than Fanatec here, which is a low bar but a real one.

How they feel on track

Here’s where the marketing-sheet comparison falls apart.

I ran both back to back in ACC on the Porsche 992 GT3 R at Spa, and in iRacing on the Skip Barber at Lime Rock (because if a base can’t do a Skippy, it can’t do anything). I used a 320 mm round rim on the R9 and the Thrustmaster Formula Wheel Add-On and the Ferrari 488 GT3 wheel on the T818.

The R9, at 100% in Pit House and about 65% in-game gain in ACC, is quick and unfiltered. The moment of grip loss at the rear through Pouhon comes through the rim as a sharp lightening, not a mushy fade. Kerbs at Eau Rouge hit hard enough that I had to dial the “road sensitivity” slider down to about 7 to stop getting rattled. Moza’s “natural inertia” setting is the one to keep an eye on: at defaults it makes the wheel feel heavier than it needs to and hides the detail, so I run it at around 130 to 150. Speed damping at 25 to 30. Max steering angle set per-car in-game, not in Pit House.

The T818 at the same rough settings (Thrustmaster Panel gain 80%, ACC gain 60%) is slightly smoother. Some people like this. Thrustmaster’s own marketing calls it “linear” and I’d call it “pre-filtered.” The 992 at Spa feels nice and cinematic, heavy through Blanchimont, but the rear step-out through Pouhon arrives about a fraction later and with less edge to it than on the R9. It’s harder to catch. The Skippy is where the gap opened up: I could feel the front tyres loading up under trail-braking into Big Bend on the R9, and on the T818 that information was there but softer. If you race GT3 mostly and want the “expensive heavy wheel” feeling, the T818 does that competently. If you race open-wheelers, Skippies, MX-5s, anything that needs fast catches, the R9 is the better tool.

Peak torque was not the differentiator. Both are easily strong enough to hurt you in a crash. Both will exceed anyone’s need for arm-fatigue realism. The 10 versus 9 Nm number is the least useful spec on the page. Slew rate (how fast the torque ramps up, not how hard) and how much the manufacturer filters the signal matter more, and that’s the R9’s advantage, not the T818’s.

Wheels and the ecosystem question

This is the real decision, and it favours Moza by a mile.

Moza sells a range of their own rims (the ES round at about $90 on sale, the CS V2 around $200, the GS V2 around $400, plus the FSR and KS formula rims), and the third-party adapter lets you mount a 70 mm PCD rim from anyone. The Moza Universal Hub is around $100. You can start cheap and upgrade the rim without touching the base.

Thrustmaster’s approach is that the T818 is a base for Thrustmaster rims. The T818 with the SF1000 Ferrari replica is a thoroughly over-the-top formula rim with a working screen, and it’s excellent for GT7 or F1 games, but that bundle runs over $1,000 and the SF1000 is not really a wheel you’d want for anything except formula cars. The Ferrari 488 GT3 rim is good and old. The Formula Wheel Add-On is decent and plasticky. Beyond that, the choice thins out fast. Third-party rims on a T818 mean hunting down an aftermarket hub, and even then the button box wiring is not something Thrustmaster supports. So if you ever want a Cube Controls rim on your desk, the T818 is the wrong base.

If you own a T300 or TS-PC and love your existing rims, the T818 keeps them alive via the adapter. That is a genuine saving. It’s also the only reason I’d tell anyone to buy one.

Software, updates, and what breaks

Pit House used to be a mess. It would lose profiles, forget calibration, refuse to see the base after Windows updates. Most of that has been fixed across 2024 and 2025, and today the main gripes on the Moza Discord are about game-specific auto profile switching being flaky (it is) and Pit House needing to be running in the background for some features (it does). The app is heavier than it needs to be and the UI looks like a mobile game. It does the job.

Thrustmaster’s Panel is minimal. This is either a feature or a bug depending on your patience. There is no on-base display, so every tweak means alt-tabbing. The T818 also got a slow start with firmware: early units had a cogging or “notchy” feel at low speeds that a 2023 firmware mostly addressed, and there was a stretch where the fan would spin up audibly during long stints. Mine still does it in summer. The base runs hot compared to the R9.

Reliability on both has been fine for me and the forums agree. Neither has the Fanatec problem of dead USB ports and three-month RMA queues. The one hardware gripe on the R9 is that the quick release lever can feel slightly loose on early V1 units; the V2 base improved it, and it never affected steering feel, just the sense of a wobble when you lift the rim. The T818’s quick release is solid, chunkier, and slower to swap.

Games and consoles

Both bases are PC-first. The T818 is Xbox compatible with the right rim and works on PC natively. It is not compatible with PlayStation, which surprises people because Thrustmaster’s cheaper wheels are. The R9 is PC only, no console support at all. If you’re a GT7 player, neither is the answer; look at the Fanatec GT DD Pro or the Logitech Pro instead, and I’d steer you to the Logitech.

On PC, iRacing, ACC, rF2, Le Mans Ultimate and AMS2 all run on both without a second thought. LMU is worth calling out because its FFB is heavy at defaults and both bases will need in-game gain dropped to around 40 to 50%.

The price gap

The R9 base is around $180 cheaper than the T818 base. That money buys a Moza CS V2 rim or the universal hub plus a used aftermarket rim. So at a matched budget of about $600, the R9 setup gets you a base and a good GT rim, and the T818 gets you a base and nothing. The T818’s included desk clamp and rails narrow the gap by about $40. It’s still not close.

FAQ

Is the Moza R9 better than the Thrustmaster T818? For most people, yes. It’s cheaper, has more detailed feedback, mounts easier, and has a much wider rim ecosystem. The T818 wins only if you already own Thrustmaster rims you want to keep or you need Xbox support.

Is 9 Nm or 10 Nm enough torque for direct drive? More than enough. Both will run most cars at 50 to 70% strength with plenty in reserve. Anyone who tells you that you need 15 Nm to be competitive is either racing at 100% for the bruises or selling you a base.

Does the T818 work on PS5? No. Despite Thrustmaster’s history with PlayStation, the T818 is PC and Xbox only. If you play on PlayStation, buy something else.

Buy this if

Buy the Moza R9 if you’re on PC, you race anything with quick weight transfer (Skippies, MX-5s, F4, Le Mans Ultimate prototypes), or you have a rig with a proper mount and want to build a rim collection over time. Get the V2, get the desk clamp if you’re on a desk, and check that your desk edge is under 55 mm thick or the clamp won’t bite.

Buy the Thrustmaster T818 only if you already own T-series rims you intend to keep using, or you need an Xbox base and won’t touch Fanatec. Before you order, price the T818 Rim Adapter (about $45) if you’re planning to use older TM wheels, verify your rig has 200 mm of clearance for the case, and make sure you’re not running it off a USB hub, because the firmware updater will not find it there and you’ll spend an evening thinking the base is dead.
