Set your wheelbase to its maximum rotation and stop touching it. That is the answer for most people reading this, and it is the answer nobody puts in the first line because it doesn’t sell a 4,000-word guide. If you run iRacing, ACC, or Gran Turismo 7 (the big three in our best racing sim comparison), those sims already know how far the real car’s wheel turns and they will clamp your rotation for you, per car, as long as your base is set wide enough to give them room. Set the base to 900 degrees, or 1080, or 2520 if you own a Simucube, and forget the number exists.
The exception is the older or more stubborn software. Automobilista 2, rFactor 2, Le Mans Ultimate, iRacing in a few edge cases, and every driver-side profile that overrides the game: those want you to think about degrees. So the honest split is this. Modern sims manage rotation; you set the base high and walk away. Legacy and physics-nerd sims hand you the number and expect you to match it to the car. Which bucket your title falls in decides whether the rest of this matters at all.
Why “matching” rotation is the whole game
Rotation is how many degrees you turn the wheel lock to lock. A GT3 car turns roughly 540 degrees. A road car is usually 900. An F1 car is somewhere around 360 to 400 because the steering rack is brutally quick and the driver never takes a hand off. If your wheelbase is set to 900 but you’re driving a car whose real lock is 540, one of two things happens depending on the sim.
If the sim is rotation-aware, it silently maps its internal 540 onto your physical 900 and everything feels correct, because it knows. If the sim is dumb about it, you now have 900 degrees of physical travel controlling a car that should reach full lock at 540, and your steering feels slow, vague, and disconnected from what your hands expect. People describe this as the car being “laggy” or “numb” and then go blame the FFB. It’s not the FFB. You gave it the wrong rotation and the ratio is wrong.
That mismatch is the single most common reason a new direct drive owner posts on r/simracing that their expensive wheel “feels worse than my old Logitech.” It usually doesn’t. It’s set up wrong.
The per-sim reality
Here is where the sims actually land, from someone who has re-checked these settings more times than I’d like after firmware updates broke them.
iRacing wants your base at maximum and manages the rest. The iRacing FFB settings guide covers Max Force and the filters once rotation is sorted. In the black box you’ll see steering set per car, and iRacing scales its internal steering lock to your physical range automatically. The one thing to get right: in your wheel’s driver software (Fanatec, Moza Pit House, Logitech G Hub) set rotation to the highest value, then in iRacing leave “use custom controls” alone unless you know why you’re changing it. If your wheel physically reaches lock before the on-screen wheel does, your base rotation is set too low. Raise it.
ACC is the easy one. It reads your base rotation and locks each GT3 and GT4 car to its correct value on its own, so long as you’ve set the base to 900 or more. If someone tells you to set ACC to exactly 540, they’re repeating a forum post from 2019 and it hasn’t been necessary in years.
Gran Turismo 7 controls rotation for officially supported wheels (Fanatec, Thrustmaster, Logitech, and now some Moza units with the right firmware). You get very little say, which annoys tinkerers and is completely fine for everyone else. GT7 will feel light on FFB regardless, but that’s a separate complaint.
Le Mans Ultimate and rFactor 2 run on the same engine and both want you to set the base high (900+) and then trust the car file. LMU generally applies the correct per-car lock, but the community argues constantly about whether it’s actually reading the base correctly after certain updates, so it’s worth a sanity check: turn the in-game wheel to full lock and confirm your hands hit the stop at the same moment.
Automobilista 2 is the one that catches people. It respects your rotation but the default per-car steering can feel off, and AMS2 players spend real time in the setup screen dialing steering ratio to taste. If a car feels wrong in AMS2, that’s expected behavior, not a bug.
The degrees worth memorizing
For the sims that hand you the number, or for anyone who just wants a mental model, this is the cheat sheet. These are physical-wheel rotation targets, not steering ratios.

If you run one number for everything because you can’t be bothered, use 540. It’s a fine compromise for GT racing and it’s survivable in a road car. Do not run 900 for formula cars unless you enjoy shuffling your hands like you’re parallel parking a bus.
The setup that actually bites people
The rotation number is easy. The stuff around it is what wastes your evening.
First: driver software fights the game. Your Fanatec, Moza, or Logitech control panel has its own rotation setting, and some games override it while others inherit it. The classic failure is setting 540 in the driver, then loading a sim that expects to control rotation itself, and now the two disagree. My rule: set the driver-side rotation to maximum and let each sim manage down from there. The only time I set a specific degree value in the driver is for a sim that ignores in-game rotation entirely, and there are very few of those left.
Second, and this is the one nobody warns you about: desk flex will ruin all of this before rotation ever matters. You can set every degree perfectly and still feel like garbage if your wheel is clamped to a flexy desk. A direct drive base putting out 8 or 9 Nm will visibly twist a normal writing desk, and that flex feels exactly like vague, delayed steering, which sends you right back to blaming rotation. If you own or are about to own a proper direct drive wheel, the mount matters more than the rotation setting. A GT DD Pro or a Moza R9 bolted to a wobbling Ikea desk is a worse experience than a Logitech G29 on something solid. Budget for a rig or at minimum a wheel stand before you spend another cent on the wheel.
Third: torque and rotation get confused in people’s heads. They’re unrelated. An 8 Nm base and a 3 Nm base both do 540 degrees identically; torque is how hard the wheel pushes back, rotation is how far it turns. If your steering feels heavy, that’s FFB strength or your in-game gain, not rotation. I mention this because at least once a month someone lowers their rotation trying to fix a heaviness problem and just makes the car darty instead.
What I actually run
For reference, because “set it to max” is easy to say and harder to trust. My bases (I’ve owned a G29, a Thrustmaster T300, a Fanatec CSL DD, and currently a Moza R9) all sit at their maximum rotation in the driver. iRacing, ACC, and GT7 get left to manage themselves. For LMU and AMS2 I set the base wide and confirm lock-to-lock visually once per car I care about. FFB strength lives around 60 to 70 percent in software with the in-game gain doing the fine work, because clipping matters far more than rotation for how connected the car feels, and rotation gets all the attention while clipping quietly wrecks people’s feel.
The Moza R9 has been the one I’d point most people at right now, not because it’s the best base made but because it’s around $500 for a 9 Nm direct drive and Moza’s per-game rotation handling in Pit House has gotten reliable. Moza being a newer brand than Fanatec still makes some people nervous, and that’s fair, but the software has stopped being the liability it was two years ago. If you’re already deep in the Fanatec world, a CSL DD does everything described here just as well; just know Fanatec’s shipping times and support queue are the thing people complain about, not the hardware. And if you’re on a Logitech G Pro or an older G29, none of this changes for you. Belt and gear wheels handle rotation identically to direct drive. You just have less torque and a bit more mechanical noise doing it.
FAQ
Do I need to change rotation every time I switch cars? In iRacing, ACC, and GT7, no. They do it for you. In rFactor 2, LMU, and AMS2 the game applies the car’s lock as long as your base is set wide enough, so you still set the base once and leave it. You only manually change the driver-side number for old titles that ignore in-game rotation, and there aren’t many of those worth playing.
What rotation should I use for GT3 cars? 540 degrees. Every real GT3 car is close to that, and every modern sim will apply it for you if you let it. Set your base to 900 or higher and ACC or iRacing will clamp it to 540 automatically. You don’t set 540 by hand unless the sim refuses to manage it.
Why does my wheel feel slow or numb even at the right rotation? Almost always one of two things. Either your base rotation is set too low, so the game is stretching a short lock across too much travel, or your desk is flexing and eating the FFB before it reaches your hands. Check the mount first. Then check that your physical wheel reaches full lock at the same instant the on-screen wheel does.
Before you order anything
Check what you’re mounting to before you check the price of the wheel. If your desk visibly moves when you push hard on it, a direct drive base will feel worse than a cheaper belt wheel on something rigid, and no rotation setting fixes that. Sort the mount, set your base to maximum rotation, and let the modern sims do the per-car work they’re already doing whether you notice or not.
