What Is a Direct Drive Wheel? Explained for Beginners

Direct drive wheels explained without the marketing noise: what they actually do, how much torque you need, and which entry bases are worth the money.

A direct drive wheel bolts the steering wheel straight onto the shaft of a big electric motor. No belts, no gears, no plastic cogs. The motor is the steering column. That’s the whole idea, and everything people love about direct drive comes out of that one design decision: the forces the sim calculates arrive at your hands without a rubber band in between smearing them.

If you want the verdict up front: yes, it’s a real upgrade, and it’s the single biggest jump in feel you can buy in sim racing. It’s also gotten cheap enough that buying a new belt-driven wheel in 2026 is a mistake. A 5Nm direct drive base costs about what a Logitech G Pro or Thrustmaster T818’s older siblings used to, and it will outlast them. But the base is only half of it, and if you bolt one to a flexy computer desk you will have spent $400 to feel your desk instead of the car.

What the old wheels were doing wrong

Every consumer wheel before this used gears or a belt to multiply a small motor’s torque. A Logitech G29 has a pair of plastic-and-metal gears inside. Turn it slowly off-center and you can hear the teeth. That gear mesh has slop in it, called backlash, which is why the G29 has that dead zone right at center where the wheel goes vague and you’re steering on faith. Belt drives (the old Thrustmaster T300, Fanatec CSL Elite) were much better, quieter, and smoother, but a belt still stretches. Under a fast direction change the belt absorbs the first few milliseconds of the force and hands it to you late and rounded off.

Direct drive has no mechanism to add lag or slop. When the front tires unload over a crest, the wheel goes light at exactly the moment the tires do. When you catch a snap of oversteer, the counter-force pushes back the instant the car rotates. That immediacy is the point. The extra torque is nice, but it’s the detail that changes how you drive.

Here’s the part nobody tells beginners: you will not immediately be faster. Most people are a couple of tenths slower for the first week because the wheel is now telling them things they’ve been ignoring, and the brain takes time to sort signal from noise. Around day four or five it clicks and you start catching slides before they happen rather than after.

Torque, and why the Nm arms race is mostly nonsense

Direct drive bases are sold on peak torque in newton-metres. 5Nm, 8Nm, 12Nm, 15Nm, 25Nm for the silly ones. Nm is a rotational force, and 5Nm at the rim of a 30cm wheel works out to roughly 3.3kg of pull on each hand. That is more than enough to make your forearms sore in your first long ACC stint.

The community obsesses over this number and it’s the least interesting spec on the sheet. Here’s why: almost nobody runs their base at 100%. I run a 12Nm base at about 60-65% in iRacing and around 70% in ACC, because past that point the peaks start clipping and you lose information. Clipping is when the sim asks for more force than the motor can deliver, so everything above the ceiling gets flattened to the same maximum. You get a wall of heavy where there should be gradations. iRacing has a built-in force meter for exactly this reason. Watch it, and turn your strength down until it stops pinning red through fast corners.

What actually matters:

  • Smoothness at low force. How does it feel at 5% of maximum? That’s where the kerb texture and tire scrub live. Cheap motors with high cogging (a magnetic notchiness you feel when the base is powered off, dragging the wheel by hand) mush that detail.
  • Slew rate, meaning how fast the base can change force, not just how much force it has at peak. This is the real reason a good 8Nm base can feel sharper than a mediocre 15Nm one.
  • Thermal behaviour. Some bases quietly reduce output as they heat up in a 40-minute race. You feel it as the wheel going soft near the end of a stint and you’ll blame yourself.

For a beginner on a desk, 5-8Nm is the honest range. 8Nm on a decent desk clamp is about the limit before the desk itself becomes the weak link. Anything above 12Nm needs an aluminium profile rig, full stop, and if you’re asking what a direct drive wheel is you don’t own one yet.

Entry bases actually worth buying

The Moza R5 bundle sits around $500-550 with wheel and pedals and it’s the one I point most beginners at. 5.5Nm, small, quiet, and Moza’s Pit House software is genuinely nicer to use than what the competition ships. The R5’s weakness is the included ES wheel rim (fine, plasticky) and the SR-P Lite pedals, which are potentiometer-based rather than load cell. You’ll want to replace the pedals within a year. Everyone does.

The Fanatec CSL DD at 5Nm (or 8Nm with the Boost Kit 180 power supply) is the other obvious pick, around $350-400 for the base alone. Better build feel than the Moza in my hands, a huge accessory catalogue, and Fanatec’s driver stack has been through more revisions than anyone’s. The caveat is the company itself. Fanatec’s shipping delays and support response times have been a running joke on r/simracing for the better part of a decade, and while the Corsair acquisition has improved things, “improved” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. If you’re the type who gets stressed by an RMA taking six weeks, factor that in.

The Simagic Alpha Mini at 10Nm, around $600, is the enthusiast’s pick and the one with the best motor of the three. It’s also the one where the software will occasionally make you want to throw something. Simagic’s ecosystem is smaller and less polished, and their approach to firmware updates has historically been “here’s a zip file, good luck.”

The Logitech G Pro exists at around $1000 for the bundle and I would not buy it. 11Nm, TrueForce, good pedals, but you’re paying a Logitech-retail premium for hardware the Chinese brands undercut by 40%. The Thrustmaster T818 is a better argument at 10Nm but Thrustmaster’s wheel selection for it is thin.

The mount is not optional, and this is where people get burned

I’ve watched more people be disappointed by direct drive because of mounting than for any other reason. A direct drive base pushing 8Nm into a particleboard IKEA desk turns that desk into a resonating drum. The wheel feels vague and wobbly, the monitor shakes, and the base is doing its job perfectly.

If you’re desk mounting, you need a desk with a solid top and preferably a steel frame, clamped hard, and you should still expect flex at higher settings. A cheap fix that works better than it should: a strip of 18mm plywood under the clamp to spread the load. If you can afford it, an 8020 aluminium profile cockpit (a Trak Racer TR8 Pro or a Sim-Lab GT1 Evo, around $500-700 before a seat) solves it permanently and you’ll never buy another one.

Also budget for a quick release if you plan to swap rims, and check what the base uses. Fanatec’s QR1 (the plastic one on cheaper bundles) develops a rattle. Their metal QR2 fixed it and it’s worth the upgrade money. Moza’s is metal from the start.

Settings that are actually a decent starting point

Every base needs setup and the defaults are usually wrong. Rough starting points:

In iRacing, set your wheel rotation in the driver software to 900 degrees or higher, turn off any “steering linearity” or filtering, then in-game enable “auto” for max force per car and let it calibrate over a few laps. Damping at 0. iRacing’s FFB is raw by design; adding smoothing hides the good stuff.

In ACC, gain around 65-70%, minimum force 0-2% (higher on cheap bases with cogging, zero on a good one), dynamic damping 100%, road effects around 20%. ACC’s FFB is quieter than iRacing’s by nature and people wrongly crank gain to compensate, then clip constantly.

Le Mans Ultimate and rF2 share the isiMotor lineage and both benefit from turning the in-game FFB smoothing to 0 and running lower gain than you’d expect. LMU’s GTE cars over the Le Mans kerbs at Tertre Rouge will find any clipping problem you have within one lap.

In Gran Turismo 7, if you’re on PS5, your options are narrower: only Fanatec, Logitech, and Thrustmaster bases are licensed. Moza and Simagic don’t work on PlayStation. That’s a genuine deciding factor and it’s the one time I’d push someone toward Fanatec despite everything above.

Set your rotation to match the car, or don’t and use 900 for everything. I gave up on per-car rotation years ago. 900 degrees for everything, let the sim scale it, life is short.

What it feels like, specifically

Take a Porsche 992 GT3 R in ACC around Spa. Coming down through Eau Rouge and up Raidillon on a belt wheel, you get a general heaviness and a vague sense of compression. On direct drive, you feel the fronts load up progressively as you turn in at the bottom, then a distinct lightening right at the crest where the car goes over and the tires unload, and if you’re greedy with throttle there’s a small, sharp twitch through the rim as the rear steps a few centimetres. That twitch is what you buy direct drive for. It’s small. You catch it with a flick of the wrists rather than a full save.

Or a Mazda MX-5 in iRacing at Okayama, which is the least glamorous combination in sim racing and the best demonstration. That car has so little grip that the FFB is almost entirely tire-slip information, and on a good direct drive base you can hold it right on the edge by feel alone with your eyes barely on the apex.

Things that annoy me after four years of ownership: the fan noise on some bases (Fanatec’s CSL DD is nearly silent, some Simagics are not), the coil whine you’ll hear at idle in a quiet room, and the way every USB firmware update is a small act of faith. My base has needed one wheel-side ribbon cable replaced. That’s it.

The pedals argument

This is the hill I’ll die on: if you have $700 total and you’re choosing between an 8Nm base with pot pedals or a 5Nm base with load cell pedals, take the load cell pedals. Braking is measured in pressure, not in how far your foot travels, and a load cell brake measures force. Going from potentiometer to load cell did more for my lap times than any wheel upgrade. It’s the most common “why did nobody tell me” moment on r/simracing, and it comes up in every single “what should I buy” thread, correctly.

The Moza SR-P load cell set (around $250) and the Fanatec CSL Pedals with the load cell brake kit (similar money) are both fine. Neither is exciting. Both are transformative compared to what came in your bundle.

FAQ

Is direct drive worth it if I only play a few hours a week? If those hours are in a proper sim, yes. If you mainly play Forza or F1 on a controller-friendly setup, the money is better spent elsewhere. Arcade-leaning games have shallow force feedback and a 12Nm base can’t invent detail the physics engine never calculated.

Can direct drive damage your wrists? It can hurt you if you’re careless. Never leave your thumbs hooked inside the spokes, keep them outside the rim like a rally driver, and don’t run 100% strength. A real crash in iRacing at 12Nm will snap the wheel out of your hands hard enough to bruise. Set the base’s torque limit in software; every one of them has the option.

Do I need a load cell brake and a handbrake and a shifter too? Load cell brake: yes, eventually. Shifter: only if you drive road cars or vintage stuff; 90% of modern GT and formula racing is paddles on the wheel. Handbrake: only for rally. Buy them in that order, spread over a year, and ignore anyone telling you the base spec is the priority.

Before you order

Measure your desk. Push down hard on the front edge of it and see how much it moves. If it flexes visibly, either buy a 5Nm base and accept it, or budget for a rig before you budget for torque.

Then check three things: whether your sim of choice is on PC or console (that decision alone rules out half the market), whether the bundle’s pedals have a load cell brake or you’ll be replacing them, and whether the base uses a metal quick release. If you’re on PC, want to spend under $600, and don’t already own a rig: the Moza R5 bundle or a Fanatec CSL DD with the CSL load cell pedal set. If you’re on PS5, it’s Fanatec and you don’t get a choice, so just buy the CSL DD bundle and set aside a weekend for the driver install.
